dcopserver error message
 

Hi,
Whenever I open certain applications such as Amarok, or something like Bibletime, I get this message which pops up before the program actually starts:

DCOP communications error (name of program)
There was an error setting up communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was: Could not read network connection list /home/<username>/.DCOPserver_linux-ppyw_0
Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running

I am using Suse 10.1 and the Gnome desktop. I was under the impression that KDE was also installed. Please give a reaon for this happening also, thanks.

I will first tell you that I am not totally certain of the fix for this particular problem, but there are other threads in this forum for similar difficulties. Try the search here using DCOP error as the keywords.

The DCOP server is indeed a KDE app used to communicate with various apps that run under it. Most of the time, when I have seen this error, it is because there has been a change in the home directory of the user (i.e. deleting a users home directory or a change in the path of the user.) Try typing from the command line:

kdeinit

This should link some libraries that may have been damaged in some way. I am not sure if it will work, but worth a try.

Thanks for the help Bob. I did a couple of things. First I tried the kdeinit command, and it read that kde dcopserver was already running. I still got the same message. So I deleted the /root/.DCOPserver file as kdeinit suggested , same results. It looks like there isn't a problem with dcopserver running, to me it looks like there aren't enough files in the correct areas for dcopserver to communicate with. I looked at some other posts that might relate to this issue, and I noticed that one person suggested doing something, don't quite remember, with the /usr/.kde folder. I don't have that folder. Also what is linux-ppyw, which I find in all of my error messages. maybe that alludes to the problem.
