Damn Small Linux looks horrible! Help!?!
 

My computer is running DSL (266mhz, 4gb HD, 64mb ram, 64mb linux swap),
and it has a horrible green-on-white look. it is unreadable. Can anyone help fix this, or would another desktop-thingy (a fluxbox type thing) work?

EDIT: It has a 32-bit graphics card.

Try running Xvesa, and select a different resolution/color depth. If this doesn't help, try running xsetup and choose a different x server.

well you tell me if fluxbox works. Try it when you start. It very well could. What environment are you using now

Xvesa is a script in DSL, available from the desktop menu. It lets you choose various screen resolutions and color depths in case your monitor is having trouble with the default.

xsetup is another script, which allows you to choose other options for your graphical system, such as choosing xfbdev as the X server instead of the default Xvesa.

If these fail to help, try the xfree86 mydsl package, which gives you much more flexibility in how the x system is configured.

When I used DSL if I used a color-depth that was too low, the colors would be sorta "inverted" to say the least.

This may not be the problem, it could be the enviroment (I don't remember a horrid-green one how-ever).

If you'd like to at least try changing your color-depth, it's not hard.

(taked from their FAQ, and changed to meet our purpose)

1. Quit X (ctrl+alt+backspace).
2. Run xsetup.sh.
3. Select a resolution above 256 colors.
4. Run startx.
5. Enjoy.

You may want to try more than one, and also try changing enviroments. At the very least, it will be readable.

Personally my solution would have been to install Zenwalk! I tried V1.2 about a year ago and it was crap. But I read a great review of V2.2 last week and decided to give it another go.

I am very, very impressed! It is as fast as DSL on my HP Celeron PC but looks and operates damn sight better!

No more posts. If a mod could cose this, that would be great.
