Cygwin and Eggdrop

Hi. I know this is very newbish, but I've been away from linux for awhiel now =P. I want to extract eggdrop (irc bot) on my windows box using cygwin, but cant seem to get it working :P. I tried
tar eggdrop1.6.15.tar.gz
but it gave me this
tar: Old option 'g' requires an argument.
Try 'tar --help' for more information.
and that didnt help me at all... Any help would be aprecieated, Thanks.
