CW058D only plays Mixed-Mode CDs with XMMS

Hi,

I would first like to say thanks because without this site I wasn't able to listen to music at all.

I have a HP Pavilion 752n PC. I dropped in a second hard-drive and installed Redhat 9 without a hitch. Sort of, some things seem to be entirely too slow.... but thats a different issue.

According to the Hardware Browser in Redhat the CD-R/RW is a Cyberdrv CW058D and the DVD is a HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8160B. I couldn't confirm this on the HP site because for the technical specs they just don't give any details about the drives.

I eventually figured out that to use XMMS to play any music CDs at all I had to install the Audio CD reader. I never cracked the case to confirm that the audio cable that normally runs from the CD player to the audio card is missing.

So, if I place a regular music cd in the CD-R, XMMS will lock up about 15 seconds into the first track. I have to kill the process to get XMMS to close.

If I place a music CD with both music and data, like the young and hopeless by Good Charlotte, then XMMS has no issues with it.

For the DVD player, it'll play music CDs just fine.

So, anyone have a clue about the behavior?

Thanks,
Frodak
