Customizing Debian 9

Since updating to Debian 9, I haven't been able to get the same level of customization as I enjoyed under Debian 8 using dconf editor. Is there a new application/way to tweak little things like expand/collapse folders in list view using those triangles. I installed dconf editor under Debian 9 (its not installed by default) but it only shows me a few options compared to an enormous list under Debian 8. Am I missing something?

You don't say what desktop environment you are using. Is it Gnome 3? If so, they have removed a lot of customization options since Gnome 2. Gnome Tweak Tool offers some relief.

Gnome 3

Indeed, Gnome 3, sorry for the omission. I used Tweak Tool but that is not nearly as much customization as I had before under Debian 8 with Gnome.
Any suggestions for more customizable desktop environments I can use in that case?

From what i hear both "mate" and "cinnamon" are similar to gnome2, hence still as customizable as gnome2 was (?).

kde would require you to change your workflow quite a bit.
xfce is another option (i can say that you can easily customize it, but can't compare it to gnome2, as it's been ages i used that).

There are more options, of course, but first consider mate or cinnamon. If both don't do it, more options could be discussed.
