Custom Kernal

I am new to Linux and have been messing with different versions of RH . started at 7.2 and upgraded to 9 and latest kernel. I think I have a pretty good configuration going on a dual CPU/1GB memory/ 250GB disk system. I run Xp and Linux on the same system and feel pretty comfortable with the Linux builds and compile procedure. I configured the system to play multimedia RP, Xine, Mplayer and Freevo. The reason I gone on is the one thing I do not understand is how would I take the configuration I have built for this machine and move it to another machine with the same configuration. That is with out having to rebuild all the code from scratch. Is it even possible to build a kernel for another machine with a dissimilar configuration and move the kernel. For example built a kernel for a 486 laptop minimal linux configuration on my dual box and transfer the final to the 486.

P.S. I have to tell you I am from a MPP computer sales background so don't go too deep into programmer speak.

Thanks
Ed Clark
