Current kernel doesn't show up with rpm -q kernel command

Hi,

Somebody who knows why the current kernel doesn't show up when I'm running "rpm -q kernel". Only the old ones show up.

Is there because I did compile it my self from source code and didn't go with a rpm package?

The other question is, now when it doesn't show up this way, Am I unable to remove this kernel later on with the rpm -e [kernel-x.x.x] and if so how do I take that one away?

Hi picatrix,
Because you installed the new kernel by source compilation. If you run rpm query, it will check the query in RPM db files, which is stored in /var/lib/rpm/__ files and that information will not be there in the db. so if you want to remove your custom kernel, boot the system in the old kernel and remove the files from /boot and /lib/modules/<current kernel> and also please have a look at the following URL's. PS: The path and files may be vary depends up on your installation.

i had something similar when it miss typed; rpm -q kernel and typed; rpm -e kernel

with; rpm -e kernel i got no a kernel showing

when i did; rpm -qa | grep -i kernel
i only got; kernel-headers-2.6.18-348.3.1.el5

so i used; yum install kernel-2.6.18-348.3.1.el5

now i get; rpm -q kernel
kernel-2.6.18-348.3.1.el5

and; rpm -qa | grep -i kernel
kernel-2.6.18-348.3.1.el5
kernel-headers-2.6.18-348.3.1.el5

as before
