Cups is independent of lpd. Cups includes a utility called cups-lpd for older systems which require lpd. Cups replaces LPRng.

Install cups. Open your favorite browser and enter this URL: localhost:631. That will get you into the cups administration. You will probably need to login as root, or, as user issue the command 'xhost +localhost' then su to root and start the browser from the command line as root.

Then configure your printers. You can have more than one configuration for the same printer, depending on the quality of print you want from each configuration.

-lpd/LPR is old print system of linux!
-LPRng is the sucessor of lpd/LPR!
-CUPS is the sucessor of LPRng!
-and lpd/LPR, LPRng and CUPS are independent system prints!

This affirmations are right?
