Cups permissions

trying to hook up an epson c62 to my SuSE 8.2 desktop via a parallel port.

i tried using the YaST2 hardware installer that comes with SuSE, it recognizes the printer, suggests model specific drivers, but when I try to print a test page, the system either hangs or reboots.

I then tried using instructions at linuxprinting org , but when I tried to access the cups server (localhost:631/admin) i cannot gain access.

I restarted the cups server (/etc/init.d/cups) from the command line as a root user.

I was then able to access the cups server, but only as root- not as the user i was logged in as.

Even when logged in AS root, I can not print a test page without the system hanging or else rebooting.

.. anyone have any ideas?

thanks.

any suggestions?

i'd rather not go through the effort if uninstalling cups if there's some other solution.
