CUPS error - trouble printing to windows printer
I'm getting so frustrated with this...
it happened before, so i just reinstall everything which worked...but only temporary... a little background: everything was running fine, then i did some homework on this linux box and i went to print, low and behold it doesn't print. it sends the job but nothing prints. that can't be right, last time i went to print it worked just fine. so i search around on the net and check the cups site (and localhost) i get all these jobs listed, but aborted..so i try restarting one and i get this: Quote:
then later on i run a test page and it works again, i'm thinking i might make it, well the third day i go to run a test page and here we go again, that stupid error... i don't get it, it was working fine, i made no changes to the printer and now it doesn't work. can anyone shed some light on this, or tell me where to goto look or what i'm even looking for? |
Have you checked the error logs in /var/log

make sure your windows comp hasnt went to suspend or sleep.
Ive noticed a print spool request doesnt wake up XP computers, but the PM is done in the bios on this one. |
printing to windows printer from linux
I hear you, brother. I have a windows 2003 server with a shared printer that has never been a problem, until!...I try to print from either Mandrake, Red Hat or Suse... makes me think it's a windoze problem.... I've been all over the windows box - group policies, local policies, default policies, local security, but no go... I can access all files read, write etc on the servers shares but it JUST WON'T PRINT!
I just know I'm going ti feel like a dork when it's finally resolved.... We're all bozo's on this bus.... |

Thanx for the response. I have set up the printer in linux under samba; I have also tried it as an lpr printer and have created an lpr port on the windows 2003 server - same story - the print job spools in linux and disappears - I sometimes get this error:

I needed to set up a guest account on my XP machine so that the print request from Linux could "log on" to the XP machine to do the printing. is this set up correctly on your Linux box. And what about the share name of the printer.

which log file am i looking for?
and before we get into all that guest account stuff, the printing was working just fine previously, with no account setup, infact, it's set up correctly... the username is correct and so is the password but let's start with the log file....which one? |
Looks like we've got
vr6stress whose printing to a printer connected to the Linux box - because he doesn't mention windows at all. His problem is that every so often printing stops working and it has to be reinstalled. bjamieso has joined this thread and is trying to print to a windows 2003 server which has never worked. Message to vr6stress look in the file /var/log/cups/error_log. The guest account stuff was for bjamieso. Message to bjamieso - suggest you start another thread as you've messed up vr6stress's original problem. AK |
alright, let me recap then...to clear up confusion...
the printer is a usb printer connected to my xp box when i first install mdk 10 and load the printer shared through, it works fine.... then it stops working, no sometimes works and sometimes doesn't...it just stops... i'll post up the error log tonight...but just so it's clear, the prints job get aborted as soon as you send them - looking through cups (localhost:631) then when you try to restart them you get that error that i posted above.... the xp box has no password (go ahead and hack me, i'm dial up...lol) and so the share references the user name the workgroup and again kde picks up the printer automactically if i deleted it and have it redetect it.... |

Have you tried to google
"Unrecoverable error: syntaxerror in token" there is one reference which may suggest a discrepancy between versions of drivers. When you loose printing is it mid way through a session. When you start a session. When you loose printing can you still see the xp box? When you have printing try the following and then again when you loose it - From the command line in root on my slackware box I can smbclient //abit/epson -U guest It invites me to type a password in this case there isn't one so I just hit <Return> it should then gives the following prompt smb: \> at this prompt I type print /root/.bash_profile the .bash_profile is a small text file that exists in my root folder. The print command sends the file to the printer whose share name on the XP box is called epson which then gets printed. at the next smb: /> type quit or exit. May give more information |
