CUPS and apps

Ok, I've been having problems with various programs. Konqueror would hang for up to 5 minutes, Mozilla would freeze, kmail would crap out when composing. All of this under various window managers. I went crazy trying to fix this.

Until I started CUPS.

Everything works fine.

Now, just out of curiousity, why in gods name would the printer daemon affect these programs so profoundly? Seems a little kooky in my book. does CUPS play a more vital role than I'm aware of?

I run mandrake 9.1

Thanks!
