Crossing into Linux

I have finally done it. I bought my "new" linux box on ebay.
here it is

Only cost $87

now i can download my linux versions so that i can test them out.

I was just so excited i needed to do something. Any comments on my choice of box or suggestions is well appreciated.

Pat

Nice box to ressurrect, especially for the price. Slap some swap space on that puppy and you have a nice low load server (needs more ram for high load).

nice box...i'm running SuSE on less power than that, and it runs great!
welcome to linux!!!

yeah it is kindsa funny how i won it -- i didnt even realize that i had an active bid. I have been trying on ebay for many weeks now and am always getting beat out right at the end -- i mean 30 seconds. so i opened up my email last night and it said i had won an item and i only placed one bid on it but no one after me had bid so i guess i got lucky. I was losing computers for like $150 that were only half the machine that i got was. I got extremely lucky.

I am thinking about buying a wireless network card -- 802.11g if possible -- and using it as my personal linux machine. I may eventually use it for a low traffic website or personal ftp.

Did i get a good machine to run linux?
will the 667Mhz processor and 128 mb ram run linux without lagging? or will i have to put more ram in. I may also use the computer to further my knowledge and inquisitive nature of the innerworkings of a computer hopfully leading me to buil my own high end machine later in life - or maybe a year

kdepa 03-26-2004 11:24 PM

that machine should run linux just fine without lag. If you lag, and you feel adventurous, you can always just use the console :-D

verdeboy2k 03-26-2004 11:28 PM

128 mb is fine, just create plenty of swap. It will be slightly sluggish running X and anything else resource intensive however. (I know this because my home network fileserver runs on a 600Mhz Athlon with 128 mb RAM... very similar actually) Needs about 400 mb swap space though.

Patbuzz86 03-26-2004 11:28 PM

or just add more cheap ram :p

detpenguin 03-26-2004 11:32 PM

my machine is 500mhz with 191mb's of ram..and it runs knoppix and SuSE 8.2 just great, with no lag at all. i use fluxbox for my wm, and it's really dang quick, actually, but kde runs nicely also, but more ram is always nice :P

Patbuzz86 03-26-2004 11:33 PM

so i guess that i caught a deal huh?

detpenguin 03-26-2004 11:37 PM

yeah, i'd say you caught a deal...lol. i wouldn't mind catching a deal like that...but then, i can't really complain about the box i'm running now, so...yeah :)

verdeboy2k 03-26-2004 11:41 PM

Yeah you scored a big time deal, that 600 mhz 128 mb RAM system I have was **** expensive when I bought it.... *grumble*

Patbuzz86 03-26-2004 11:42 PM

like i said i didnt even know that i was getting in it just kinda happened -- if i had remembered that i was bidding on the item i probably would have been watching it closer

i put a bid in on it just for fun cuz i wanted to see how high others would go on the item so i put a max bid in of $100 and ended up getting it for $87 plus sales tax and shipping and handling from Detroit to Chicago bringing the grand totoal(monitor not included) to $125

I was stoked

detpenguin 03-26-2004 11:50 PM

what distro are you gonna start with?

Patbuzz86 03-26-2004 11:51 PM

believe it or not this was the first time that i have ever bought something on ebay. for as big of a computer nerd that i feel i am i never bought anything on ebay

Patbuzz86 03-26-2004 11:53 PM

well i have mandrake 9.2 and slackware 9.1 so i will start with one of those
i plan on downloading maybe red Hat or fedora and maybe giving SuSE a try too -- what are some suggestions
