Creating Shortcuts in KDE
 

just recently installed redhat 8.0 and im pretty newbie. I can install the programs and such and lauch em via the run applet by just typing in its name however its rather anoying. Just curious on how to make desktop shortcuts under KDE.

If you find the file you want, like /usr/bin/ymessenger and then drag it into your folder called desktop (found in /home/xxxx ) and then you will get a menu, copy move and make link

Making a link puts a shortcut onto the desktop.

sweet.. what about icons and such?

and another thing.. can i like like a command.. like for a service ? lets say like

service httpd start

can i do sumthing like that ?

Well, I guess you don't need to type httpd start every time.
If you want to start httpd automatically, go to Control Panel, System, Services, and tell the httpd to start on boot.

To add an icon on the desktop, click on the desktop, click add a link to application, give it the name, go to command tab, type in the command, say, if you want to open a Sound Server, type kcmshell arts. Close. The icon will appear on your desktop. Try it. If it doesn't work, your command was wrong or the programm is not configured.

N.B. Don't start on boot those services you don't need. It will speed up your system performance.

to run any program, just press Alt F2 and enter the name of the program.

To create an icon on the desktop, right-click your mouse and create a new shortcut (note, this is more difficult than in windows, but basically the same).
