Creating icons for the desktop

I am sure that it is possible to create my own icons for the desktop - rather than just default to the ones supplied.

Where would I find how to create such an icon? What are the rules?

You can create icons with the Gimp. There are probably other programs that will do it also. There are lots of icons which you can download. Some are for KDE, others for Gnome etc. Most icons are .xpm files.

The Gimp takes a while to learn, but it is a very powerful editor. If all you are looking for is to pretty things up, download some, install what you like, and change them at will.

I am quite happy with the ones supplied, but if you head over to http://www.kde-look.org/ you'll find loads of icon files. I am sure if you (politely) emailed one of the authors, they'd give you some pointers as to where "the rules" are to be found.

There are no real rules: you just need a small, appropriate picture. In Fedora they hang out in either of

/usr/share/icons/
/usr/share/pixmaps

and are generally .png files. Have a look, and you might find ones you like better than the defaults. You can keep them anywhere, and I put new ones in ~/.icons.

There is a specialist icon editor called KIconedit. It comes with KDE, but can still be installed if you're a Gnomophile like me.
