created devices don't stay

using fedora 4 why trying to sync my palm I recognized that there was no ttyUSB1 in my dev/devices. In reading several posts and other items it said to create them using mknod,

I create the device using mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1
which creates the device but as soon as my sync is done that device is gone.

Can someone point me in the right direction to create this device permanently.

I looked at some of the other posts for this and the ones I found the information went over my head.
