create new user - password encryption

hi, i'm using mandrake 10 and i just tried to create a user bye editing the passwd file and the manual and many other places says that u need to encrypt he password using the crypt command except i cant seem to be able to find such a command. did a bit of googling and found that some distros dont include crypt cuz of export regl. stuff (?). but i wasnt able to find any replacement or anything. what do u need to do to create a user without drakconfig cuz its all messed up on my pc and i would like to do it on CLI.

you're editing the files directly?? blimey, that's hardcore!

just use the standard "useradd" command to add the user, and "passwd" to manipulate the password.

i did thought of that but i thought editing the passwd file was the "proper" way to do it cuz thats what i read abt linux/unix some years ago. just wondering what if u wanted to create around 10 users at once?

for x in bob alice hans george abraham john lisa ota dale
useradd $x
basicly this is a simple bash script, wich loops thrue all the usernames, place them in the variable X
execute the commands between do and done, replacing $x with the username.
This will allow you to add 10 users.

You can ofcause just run adduser 10 times.
