Create bootable image from installed Linux or VM
 

Hey together,

i am relatively new to Linux.
For my work i need to create a Linux-Distribution with a special software to connect to a server via RAS.

Well i searched the Web for about 2 weeks now and havend found a working option to get a bootable iso of my Linux.

Under Windows with some tools thats no problem... so there should be a option for Linux too.

The Linux i use is a openSUSE. I have the chance to a) install it in a VM (VirtualBox) or b) install it on my PC...

The data installed on your hard disk has configuration data that is very specific to the host on which it is running. This cannot be generalized easily. It is simpler to just install the OS from media intended for that purpose.
If it could be as simple as copying a generalized image to a hard disk, why do you think distros would include the fairly complex installation systems that are used in the first place?
If using a VM is a possibility, you should be able to replicate the VM image arbitrarily.

As above, the installed OS is particular to that HW setup.
You can look at mondorescue www.mondorescue.org/, clonezilla clonezilla.org , systemimager www.systemimager.org/ etc etc if you want to see the issue involved.
For a different HW (or 32 v 64 bit) setup, installing the base OS, then adding the relevant tools/apps, then add the cfgs from your 1st machine is the way to go.

If you use openSuse it is somewhat easy to create a custom installation using AutoYAST, which is somewhat similar to Red Hat's Kickstart or Debian's preseeding.
On Debian/Ubuntu you can also use Remastersys or Live-Build for creating an installable ISO-image from an installed system, but I don't know if something similar exists for openSuse.

Wonder if using SuseStudio would work to create your needs?


Bootable image as in what? CD/DVD or usb flash?

Clonezilla might work. Have to wait till i get permission to boot another image in my PC.

Hope that works. Debian isn't an opportunity for my needs.

Never heard of SuseStudio... will google that ;)

Depending on what you have installed, 4G may be a bit too small unless you really do a lot of work.

See if you can build your needs at SuseStudio that would fit in an image made for usb. You download that image and use dd command to put it on a usb flash drive. If you make your appliance at SuseStudio correctly (and it may take a few tries) you can then download the appliance in any of a few formats.



Also if you are asking if a virtual hard drive can be copied to a usb then that answer would be an easy yes. Again space is an issue here.
