Create A virtual machine for web development test environment.

Hello -

I'm looking into creating a virtual machine to mirror a web hosting environment I pay for. Long story short, I need a lab so I am not taking down the live site with my mistakes.

Questions:

1 - What OS is most commonly used and / or best for running apache web server?

My paid host is running "Operating System =linux; Kernel Version 2.6.28.5-grsec-sg2"

2 - What is the best open source solution for creating a virtual linux machine on a box running XP?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

1 - anything will suffice really, arbitrary choice would be CentOS.

2 - I would suggest KVM running on a CentOS host, for a window host, I'd just use vmware server. Why do you need open source??

Why bother making? A ton of them exist already pre-made. See VMplayers virtual appliances and other xammp and lammp vm's.
