crc error<6> when trying to install Mandrake Linux

Please help me, I'm going nuts!! I've tried installing 2 different distributions of Linux (Red Hat & Mandrake). Nothing seems to be working. I got the following error when trying to install Mandrake:

crc error<6>Freeing initrd memory: 2864k freed
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:03

Can someone help me figure out what I need to do in order to get this installed.

My system specs are:

MSI 865PE NEO2 motherboard
MSI 64 MB Graphics Card (FX5200 Series)
Intel P4 2.4 GHz
Western Digital 80 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
512 DDR RAM (Corsair)
LG Electronics 52x CD-ROM
LG Electronics CD-RW/DVD ROM (GCC-4480B)
Sony Floppy Drive

How do you have the drives configured on the IDE lines???

Thanks for the link but I already saw that & tried to see if it would work. No such luck. As for the IDE cables, I have my Hard Drive on IDE1 and set as master. The CD-ROM is on IDE2 and is set to slave and the DVD/CD-RW is on IDE2 as well and set to slave. I don't know if this is a hardware problem or what. Someone told me to try Partition Magic 8 and try to wipe my drive clean but I'm not sure if that is the problem. Like I said before, I've tried installing Red Hat & Mandrake & I keep getting the error message about a kernel panic. I'm really not sure what to do now...

try "Knoppix"...it boots from cd.
once it is functional...you can do "hdd-install" (i guess) to install to your hard-drive.
I will find out more about your error.

Try removing the CD-ROM from the IDE line 2 and setting the DVD/CD-RW as single on that line. You usually cannot have 2 devices set to slave on the same IDE line, they will both try to talk to the IDE line at the same time.

Most CD/DVD-type IDE devices connect with the older 40 line IDE cables rather than the newer 80 line cable-select ones. Having 2 CD/DVD devices is also a little redundant, but after you have everything installed, you can set them back to the original configuration, minus the snafu'd jumper settings of course.

Alright, I was mistaken. I had the CD-ROM on IDE2 and set as slave and the DVD/CD-RW on IDE2 and set to master. I unplugged everything from the CD-ROM & just set the DVD-CD-RW to slave to see what it would do. I tried using Knoppix & it displayed alot of info. It said "starting init process" but it came up with tons of errors. The last two lines said:

KMOD: failed to exec/sbin/modprobe -s -k binfat -0000, errno=5

Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init = option to kernel.

I have no idea what any of this means. I'm not sure if I should try a program that might wipe out whatever is on the hardrive. There shouldn't be anything though cause I haven't been able to successfully install any version of Linux. Ahhh...I'm going insane...what do you think I should do!?

Oh, one other thing. I have noticed that when it shows the ambios screen that it displays Sec Master Drive - ATAPI Incompatible. I'm guessing it says that because I unplugged the CD-ROM...
