CPU upgrade with Mandrake 9.1
6 months ago, I passed the trial of fire of learning enough about Linux to enable me to setup my own personal web and VNC server which I use for PHP/SQL/Flash development work.
The box is a PII, w/ 192mb RAM running Mandrake 9.1. I have recently acquired an AMD Athlon 1.4gig CPU and motherboard and would like to upgrade my server, though I suspect this isn't as simple as swapping the HDD. So the questions are: 1. Can I simply swap the HDD over to the new system and everything will be fine? 2. If not, what steps would I have to take to get my currently configured OS onto the new system? Thanks in advance, Scrawl |
I think you can simply pull out your hard disk and put it into the new system. The only thing that you might need to change is the x windows configuration as presumably the new system will have different graphic controller...
I did the same thing recently. I did not expect it to work but it did. I would recommend that you back up your stuff first & make a note of your important config settings in case things go pear shaped... but im sure it will be ok.. good luck |
