CPQ PL1500 install

Hello guys,
I'm new to linux and trying to install RH7.1 on a compaq proliant 1500R. Since this machine doesn't seem to want to boot from CD, I had to make aboot floppy disk. I am giving the "linux text expert mem=192M" parms but it keeps on jamming on: "Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:41"

System config is:
Dual 166 CPUs
SCSI 0=4.5Gb
SCSI 5=CD
No RAID, got one if needed
Ram=192Mb
No IDE whatsoever present

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Maybe you're trying to boot on a IDE based kernel instead of a SCSI based kernel ? Way installing 7.1 ?

7.1 is the version I had. Whould 9 be better and includes the SCSI kernels? If not what should I do to correct the problem.

Thanks.

I downloaded RH9 and still have that: "Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:45" message.

Any clues?

Actually, RedHat should provide these kernels, especially SCSI and IDE on disk. Have you already take a look at the redhat CD's ?

Have a look at: http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HO....html#BOOTROOT

Did you also take a look at the hardware list on te Redhat site? Is all your hardware supported ?

Hope this helps,

By searching on the RH site I've been able to get through the first steps by specifying the parms:
linux mem=exactmap mem=0xc000000@0
0xc000000@0 stands for 192M ram

It is getting to the formatting file system but hangs there.

Partitionning in Disk druid seems fine.

I have a NCR53c825 with 2x ST15150 4.5Gb ID:0,1
and a SCSI CDROM at ID:5

any clues?

Howzit

The prob seems that it might br that RH is not see you SCSI apater card try making the follwing images from your RH9 distro.

if u have a linux box follow these steps :

1. goto dir on cd that says images
2. cat bootdisk.img > /dev/fd0
3. cat drvblock > /dev/fd0
4. boot from the bootdisk.img disk when u get to the linux prompt type linux dd this will go through the normal install then it will prompt u to install addtional drivers incert the disk img drvblock and see if the drivers are available on this disk.
5. If not find out what adapter u have and try downloading the linux bootable drivers from that website. and try the above again.

if you have a windows pc and there is no linux box available then under dosutils from linux cd there will be cmd called rawrite.exe to create the img bootdisks.

Good luck
