Hi All
I could not create local user on linux machines which are acting as NIS clients running on RHEL 4.7, but i could do it successfully on RHEL 5.4 machines.

Quote:

useradd: cannot create directory /home/hplss
[root@0016 ~]# passwd hplss
passwd: Unknown user name 'hplss'.
[root@0016 ~]# lsb_release -a
LSB Version: :core-3.0-ia32:core-3.0-noarch:graphics-3.0-ia32:graphics-3.0-noarch
Distributor ID: RedHatEnterpriseAS
Description: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 7)
Release: 4
Codename: NahantUpdate7

Are you able to SSH into the machine you are trying to create users on and create them directly on there?

Hi Kasl33,

i am logging into the server with my NIS client via SSH only. I saw some of the older LQ threads suggests to stop "ypbind" services and then to give a try. But i am not in the postition to stop the ypbind services.

Regards
Kingston

If the NIS server is running RHEL5.x, the tool versions may be incompatible with 4.x .
Also, RHEL4.x has not been supported since Feb 2012 https://access.redhat.com/support/po...pdates/errata/, unless you pay extra for EUS (see that link).
