Corrupted MBR

I downloaded a copy of Mandrake 10 Community and tried to install it. Afterwards my PC wouldn't boot. I had installed Lilo on the MBR (I believe) like I usually do and I got an L when it didn't boot. I said fine and tried to reinstall this time using Grub as the boot loader still nothing I had a hanging GRUB on screen. I tried to reinstall Mandrake 9.1 and I still had this issue with Lilo. I never had a problem with the boot from this. I went into my Red Hat 9 distro and did an fdisk /mbr it said it couldn't do it. I then tried installed Red Hat 9 with Grub as the boot loader and still the same thing with the hanging GRUB. I can't boot a Win 98 boot disk I was going to try an fdisk again this time with that but it wouldn't load up. I tried to put in my Windows XP disk. After it said press any disk to boot from CD it hanged. I remember when I went to partition the disk for Red Hat 9 I believe I might of some how installed to something else possibly the first sector of the hard drive. I remember seeing a spot extremely small 1 sector or so above the rest of the partitions which said it was free space that usually isn't listed there if I explained this right. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

I don't know if this will help, but a while back i was trying to install lunar on a box and kinda ran into the same prob. there may or may not be something on their site still but i think it had to do with rm /mbr. I don't think windows uses the mbr that may or may not be why it won't let u delete it. maybe if u google for removing the mbr u might get some better info. Sorry i couldn't help more
