corrupted etc/ directory? help plz!!

Hi all,

I've been trying to troubleshoot an ailing Kubuntu/Dapper 6.06 system and I seemed to have reached a dead end.

The system hangs shortly after booting, giving an error message that says "Can't find Inittab". By searching other forum threads, I found that I may be able to solve the problem by copying a new Inittab file from a Live Dapper CD into the one installed on my hard drive.

I've managed to get the hda1 mounted using the LiveCD, but I can't seem to copy -- or access in any way -- the etc/ directory on my hard install. I've tried "sudo-ing" to change file permissions, but I keep getting the following error:

Code:
chmod: cannot access 'etc/': Input/output error
Here's the results of an "ls -la" on the hard install. the "etc/" directory clearly has some screwy file permissions, but I'm at a loss as to how to fix at this point. Any recommendations? Or is it time for a fresh install? Many thanks in advance!

It seems to be either a hardware issue or the filesystem is bad. Run fsck on the partition containing the root filesystem. You might want to backup what you can first, because the drive itself may be going bad.
