corrupted drive - red hat won't book
 

I have an old box running Red Hat 5. I had a misfortune of losing power when the system was running and now it won't boot. It gives me an error message stating that there's a fault on one of the drives, tells me that it has to check that drive, and then it lets me login as a root but will not let me do anything (for instance the networking option does not work). But I did notice that it told me that I should use the 'fsck'. But I'm very much unfamiliar with that. Any idea of what I can do? Thanks for any suggestions?

By all means run fsck against the bad partition. fsck does an excellent job of fixing a broken file system. Here is the man page for fsck:

I recommend that you use the -y option to keep from having to reply y over and over again. Also after you have run fsck take a look in the lost+found directory for that partition. fsck places any orphan files it finds in lost+found.
