COpy Screen configuration from Knoppix to Mandrake

This is driving me crazy... You see, for some problems with my screen I must use another screen (it's 10 years old). I lokked for it in the Mandrake Hardware Database, and it ain't there (now I don't remeber the model number). So I only can run Mandrake 9.1 in console mode. I'd like to run Mandrake in X-mode (graphical). Is there any way of doing that? When I run "startx" it gives an error in the file xf86config... Don't remeber it (if you ask me to do that, I'll copy the message here).

My doubt is that I can run knoppix 3.3 perfectly with that screen. Is there any way of copying the configuration from Knoppix and bring it to Mandrake?

Thanks

In Mandrake look for the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and make a backup copy in case anything goes wrong.

Then boot Knoppix from the CD, mount the partition containing Mandrake's /etc/X11 directory and replace that config file with Knoppix's own /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (which will be in ramdisk).

Reboot into Mandrake and try startx.

If that doesn't work you can also compare the Knoppix and Mandrake config files and maybe try changing one thing at a time.

The answer to your question is nearly a yes. For the same version of xfree86, you should have the same config file to get things going. If you can get going with Knoppix, copy your /etc/XF86Config-4 file so that you can use it for the relavent corrections to your Mandrake config.

Your best bet is to copy the make and model number off the back of the monitor and google for its specs. You will need to know whether its a multi-sync or a fixed frequency model. The only things you really need to know to get your monitor to work are:horizontal Sync, Vertical refresh, and the maximum color depth/resolution.

For example, my KDS VS-i7 has a hsync rate of 30-70 and a vert refresh of 50-160. Its max refresh rate is 1280x1024@60hz. The relavent sections of my XF86Config-4 file are:
Code:

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "monitor1"
    VendorName "Plug'n Play"
    HorizSync 30-70
    VertRefresh 50-160

#got a few modelines that were entered by the configurator for dvd playback, but they don't matter
EndSection

and
Code:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "screen1"
    Device "device1"
    Monitor "monitor1"
    DefaultColorDepth 16

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Virtual 1024 768    #this is a new one. I'm used to the Modes "1024x786" "800x600" stuff
    EndSubsection
EndSection

I did some digging and I came up with this file on my Gentoo partition:
XFree86Config.example(I've posted it to a spot on my website). It seems to be full of really good notes. Leave it to the folks at XFree86 and Gentoo to make sure we had an idea of what's actually going on. Kudos.

Check it out. Good luck.

maroonbaboon posted at the same time as I did. Good advice too.

edited because we all should be nice

Thans for your help! But I didn't it right! I've just copied the file XF86Config-4 from Knoppix to the hard disk of Mandrake. And then I've run starx on Mandrake. The error says that "the support fot this video adaptaer is very experimental!". Here's the file var/log/XFree86.8.log (in mandrake).... What can I do??
