converting to linux
 

Hello,

I want to put linux, operating system and windows like programs, on a Lenovo T60, about 7-8 years old.

I am computer literate and that is about all.

What is the first step?

Can I download all?

Yours appears to be an oldy but goody, with a Core2Duo. First question deals with hardware -- how much RAM does it have, now? Second is software -- what Operating System is on it presently? Third is preference -- what do you want to do with it?

Many will say, "go with ubuntu or mint!" But if only one gig of RAM, there are better choices than the "latest and greatest." So please answer the three above Qs so we can better serve you.

Well, you can go with Ubuntu 12.10 desktop version.

But before you start, once go through:-
1. System requirements/prepare for installation
2. Installation instructions
3. Download

Firstly, you don't want Ubuntu. If you have the T60 version with Intel graphics, it may not boot. In any case, it's prone to all sorts of odd problems from version to version.

You want something that will easily encrypt your data, by ticking a box at installation time: Thinkpads are very stealable. You choice will depend on how much memory you've got. Good options are:

Linux Mint: Ubuntu debugged and improved. The Mate (plain) and Cinnamon (fancy) GUIs will both just about run in 512MB and will be great with 1MB.

Fuduntu. Rolling release: no versions, you just install and update regularly. Particularly aimed at laptops. Recommends a minimum of 384MB.

SalentOS. Very light and fast.
