Linux Mint 12 works on a Lenovo 3000 N100, which uses a thinkpad motherboard. PC-BSD also works. Fedora works as well.

A thinkpad should be very similar. You should test a live disk with ALL of your hardware and periphrals.

The tuner software for your car will probably run under wine, but you might want to dual boot with windows just in case.

In many cases, Linux plays music and movies smoother then Windows does. The sound quality (linux mint vs vista business) is superior on my machine.

If the live disk works, so will the full version of the same exact distro and release.

Have you looked into plex, which runs on linux? The functionality should be similar. Here's the website.

http://plexapp.com/

I haven't tried plex myself (disclaimer) but I heard that it's an awesome application. Of course, you could get a nice nvidia graphics card and decent monitor and speakers. That would work well with vlc or mplayer too.
