Unhappy continuous reboot

I have just installed Mandrake Ver 10.1 . My system is: 2.0ghz PIV PCChips motherboard, 128mb DDR Ram 80gb Maxtor IDE Hard drive Creative Modem Blaster. When I boot the machine a screen comes up with the choices of linux linuxhb or failsafe and if I select nothing or any of the choices the computer reboots. I can never get any farther than this. Can anyone help?

I am not sure about Mandrake but do you remember if your using Lilo or Grub and where you installed the boot loader? You should be able to use a boot floppy (if you made one) or a bootable cd and edit your boot loader to fix it. Need more info to assist further.

Here's some more info: I'm using Lilo w/ graphic menu part:
hda1-5992mb <0x83> ext 2
hda5-494mb <0x82> linswap
hda6-69829mb <0x83> ext2
memory test:
via cle266 chipset
via c3 sameul2 796mhz
memory test passed

root partition found on dev/hda1 type ext3

when I tried using the grub loader I got a screen with l: and then a whole bunch of 99s and it freezes.

I have tried the bootloader on all 3 partitions with no luck

This may be well off the mark, but it might be worth considering:

I installed F3 on an old Celeron 700 Box with 160meg. More often than not it would either hang, or reboot just after the Grub screen. No matter what I did made any difference. Then I put another 256Meg of memory and, from memory, it hasn't crashed at boot at all. You have even less memory. Maybe drop some more in just to test it.

floppy boot

I ahve even booted from the floppy and changed to lilo with no graphics and it starts to load and then reboots the machine. Could there be something wrong with the software?

Could that be a problem with the runlevel?
