Constant disk access in Kubuntu

Since installing Kubuntu I keep hearing the heads in my laptop's hard drive as they go into resting position (as is normal when the drive isn't used for a few seconds), wait some two or three seconds and then are energized again.

This isn't a drive health problem (aka head crash); I've experienced those, and what's happening here is not the heads being reset over and over again, it's just the drive heads going to sleep and being woken up immediately afterwards.

I think this is causing much unneeded stress to my drive, and I'd like to stop it. Problem is, I've no idea what's causing it, or what to do about it.
Any ideas?

The commands
iostat -d
might be of some use. See if you can find out what's doing the writing.

This migt just be a result of the journaling filesystem.
