Console Video mode not restored on X termination (after dual monitors config)

I have a fresh installation of Slackware 12.2

After configuring dual monitors on an ATI radeon X1550 (dual DVI out), when exiting Xorg one monitor fades through a bunch of colours while the other goes dark.

I then have to CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot and restore the video mode.

Is it likely I have set something wrong in my xorg.conf or is there a way to restore a console video mode when X terminates?

Well, I got it working - I set up a virtual desktop using the virtual option in xorg.conf and used xrandr to change the video outputs.

Still would be interesting to know what caused it though.
