Console multitasking?

Is there some kind of multiple workspace thing in the linux console? I'm not using any kind of GUI and I connect via SSH to a computer.

I was wondering if I can switch to another console or something while working on something else in another without having to open up multiple ssh connections. I don't need to be under different user names. I hope someone knows what I'm talking about. I remember reading about it, it was something like pressing ctrl and the f keys, but I don't remember.

I'm new to linux and getting around fairly well. Sorry if this question has already been answered or is really stupid.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it :) Although I think the way I saw was a little easier, I'll read up on your method and see how it goes.
