connecting with RedHat

hello, can someone tell me how do i connect to internet from RedHat 8.0?What should i use to connect? There are options like web browser, email etc. but there is no direct dial up connection for the internet (or however one gets connected from linux).

The method of connection depends on the connection you have. It may be dialup, cable modem, wireless, local network. There are many possibilities. It's hard to help you without knowing which type of connection is the one you use.

connecting with RH 8.0 is VERY easy. Step one is to make sure you have a compatable modem: most U.S. robotics are good, and if its an external modem, even beter. Hook up the modem, RH 8.0 will find the modem, most likely, when you start your computer. You will be asked if you want to configure the modem, select "configure." Step two is to use a program already installed and accessable from the start menu (i.e. click on the red hat on the bottom left of the menu bar). It should be under: Extra- KPPP. This will bring up a dialog box with the information to fill in: i.e. your isp dial up number, your login, your pass word. That should do it. I've found that configuring dial up, or DSL, for RH is just as easy, or easier, that for Windoz.

I'm using dial-up connection.Ok ill try that program KPPP now.

My modem is Inter(R) 536EP Modem.I found internet configuration wizard in RH so when i tried to make modem connection it said "probind for modem" and then "no modem detected" so i guess my modem is a winmodem and it can't work under Linux am i right?

Yes, winmodems are notorious for being trouble in Linux distros in general.

I suppose you knew this, but Red Hat 8.0 is pretty old. Take that into account. I would recommend another distro, but that's forbidden for anybody but a Debian user to do so. One should be along momentarily.

so since i have RH 8.0 and no modem for it can someone tell me what would be the best modem to use? Thanks.

Your almost there...

Your almost there in term of getting connected. I like RH 8.0 and have used it for years- it may be older, but it is very user friendly and gets the job done. Your best and lest expensive bet for a modem is to ask around if anyone has an older 56K US serial port modem- lots of people are switching to DSL and have these stashed away. Avoid USB modems as they are just too much touble to use with RH 8.0. If you run across any external modem give it a try. I'll post my modem model number later today... Its possible that you could get an ethernet card and service for just about the same cost of a modem- and RH 8.0 does fine great with that. Boo Hissss for winmodems- there not even REAL modems anyway.

A modem that works

Here is good 56K modem that works for RH 8.0, and 7.0, and 9.0: it is a USRobotics 56K
Voice Faxmodem model #0525. I think that the official Redhat site has a hardware
compatability list with many more modems.
