Connecting with proxy server

I am new to Linux. I am using Debian 4.1.1, I have a requirement to connect my PC to a proxy server, send data to it and receive response. How can I configure my PC to do the same.

Someone please help me in this issue

Do you mean in firefox or iceweasel?
Goto
edit=>preferences=>advance=>network=>settings
add the proxyserver and port

Thank you for your response, but i don't want to connect through browser. My requirement is that i have a data say a HTML request, I want this data to be sent through socket connection to the remote server(normal socket or raw socket) and receive the response.
