Connecting via the command line

I have just installed FC3 and am trying to familiarize myself with it. I've found that I can connect to the internet by: applications menu -- system tools -- network device control -- then clicking on activate, and then OK. Installing the 'modem lights' icon on the panel shows me that I am connected but I cannot actually connect by clicking on it. How can you connect from the command line and would this be any easier -- or maybe I should ask, would it be easy enough for a newcomer to Linux to use? Thanks for the help.

you could try getting pppconfig, then running it from the command line also setting up permissions so you can run it as a user. I think u can do it using the utility then go to the modem lights properties and set connect to pon and disconnect to poff.

I appreciate your response but it went way over my head. I just bought the book "Linux Newbie: Linux Basics for New Users" and I also have "Fedora Linux 3 for Dummies". I'm gonna have to do some digging and see if I can determine what you said. Sorry -- hate to come across as a dummy but at my present stage of development, I can use Linux only for basic things -- installing and uninstalling, limited use of the command line, wordprocessing, connecting to the internet, using the web browser and eMail, etc.
