Connecting Two Linux desktops

I just recently started learning how to navigate through Linux and I'm still very green.

As of right now, I have two Linux desktops with private IP addresses connected through a Layer 2 switch and I'm having difficulty between the two. I have cant seem to get either desktop to recognize the other. They will not even ping each other. The loopback addresses work for each but I cannot get them to connect so I can send a simple file from one to the other, much less even ping each other. Any suggestions?

What IP scheme are you using between the two machines? Can you post the output of "ifconfig" from both machines?

Sounds like a firewall is enabled on both and blocking ports the services you are trying to connect too are blocked. Disable firewall on both and see if that helps.

The output from '/sbin/route' might be useful too.
