connecting to the internet on mandrake

i am a n00b to linux and use a speed touch usb modem. (alcatel) ADSL

i had loads of problems with my modem on suse 9.0 so i thought i would try mandrake 9.2. i installed it and configured it all and it loaded up.

i went into the control center and then into internet connections and i clicked the wizard thing and it went through fine. i put a floppy in with the microcode and it accepted it. it then said it was trying to connect for ages but then told me it couldnt. i have tried several different typed of details to check i was getting them right but it doesent give you any specific errors. what i want to know is if there is a program somewhere that i can use that allow me to put in my username and password then give me errors when they happen (i was one on suse called Kppp but i cant find it on mandrake) sorry if this is a really noobie question but im used to being able to just put a cd into the drive and run it then put some details in and away you go.

Sorry, I doubt whether any of my suggestions would be of any assistance, as I understand that alcatel have updated the speedtouch once or twice, since I was having mega snags with mine (the one that looks like a turquoise cow shit! :D).

I seem to recall that when I installed version 9.0, I only had to copy the microcode into /usr/share/speedtouch and then ran the wizard, then I just went to connect and it worked.

If you search here at LQ for "speedtouch adsl" or variations of alcatel speedtouch usb modem adsl, you should kick up a fair number of thread that COULD have a few clues.

Oh, and I also had it so it would start at boot, so if I wanted net access, I just clicked the browser. I also seem to recall having to switch of the firewall to start with, as I never did manage to get "shorewall" (which was the default offering of firewalls from mandrake).

Failing that, there's the slightly more expensive option (that I went for eventually because it used to piss me off waiting the the connection to drop/reconnect when switching OS's) and that's get a network card and a modem router (I use a solwise SAR110, now superceded by the SAR130), even a nugget like me managed to configure it, and now I let that handle the connection and firewall.

Also try here you might not get answers as quickly as you do at LQ, but it's distro specific, and while some of the possible solutions will be the same as the ones that you get at LQ, some might not!, worth a try any way.

iamacup doesn't mention a location, though if in the UK, it's probably a "BT wholesale" based product.

In which case, it would be a pppoa service, and I don't know if roaring penguin will manage a pppoa connection???

Just a thought.
