Connecting to the internet from the Redhat Shell

Hi, I'm kinda new to linux, and totally new to the shell prompt, I wanna connect to IRC channels and webpages from runlevel 3 (The Command Prompt - Shell), and I'm on a cable modem. How can I do this, do I have to start my net services first and then run an internet program with a command or is it totally not able to be done?

If you're on cable modem, chances are your connection is already setup when it boots, you just need to install console based applications. For webbrowsing I recommend links or w3m(better multilanguage support), for irc BitchX is not bad, but can be a bit difficult to get use to at start.

lynx is included in pretty much every distro (text based web browser).
