Connecting to Juk (on Debian) from WinXP
 

Hiya Everyone:

I've got a laptop that is running WinXP, a Mac Running OSX and a server running Debian w/ gnome and Juk installed. I've installed cygwin on my laptop and am hoping to connect to Juk so I can play my mp3s through my debian machine (which has speakers & subwoofer attached). I am hoping to do the same thing through my Mac.

Does anyone out there know if 1. This is possible and 2. How do I get WinXP to Debian/Gnome/Juk and 3. How to connect a mac OSX to Debian/Gnome/Juk?

Have you looked at PuTTY (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty)?

In the UNIX/Linux world, you'd just use ssh; PuTTY gives you that from winders.

Thanks for replying! I had a vision that what I'd do is stick some speakers on an old PC at the back of the office, install debian w/ gnome and something like Juk, then I'd install cygwin on my laptop and connect to Juk via xwin and play out of the speakers. What I thought would be an easy task has stretched my cognitative powers more than I was expecting, but after neglecting most other things I've now managed to get WinAxe working as the x-server (demo version) and have had a play with with various media players (esperanza, rhythmbox etc) and have so far managed to play mp3 well enough but am having troubles getting anything to play .asx or .ram files.

For what its worth, using putty to ssh into the machine then using xmms2 at the command prompt seems like the easiest way of doing, but it doesn't look like Debian yet has a asx plugin for xmms2 so I am not sure if I can get internet radio to work. I know everything I want can be done, but its difficult to do! What is really needed is a good "how do I make a jukebox out of my linux machine" tutorial.

You've gotten a little past anything I know for sure about, but... maybe set up a web page on your Linux box that will serve your intranet and just use that? I mean, let the XP box just access a web page so you don't have to fiddle around with a lot of software; kind of let Windows be Windows and just give it a place to connect to, something like that? Ultimately, it gets down to files going from one place to another and it seems like it might be easier to fiddle with Apache to get something going. I dunno, just a thought.

Okay, just for prosperity's sake, I've played a bit more and have come up with this as the best solution (at least for me):

load debain w/ gnome
install amarok
install vnc4server (see: http://www.debianadmin.com/remotely-...using-vnc.html)
download vnc client on your windows machine (I haven't tried it, but it looks like this will work for Mac osx: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/)
now you just VNC onto your machine, play, queue music, etc and other people in your office/household can the same ....
