I have just loaded ubuntu and want to connect to the internet. We have an Ipstar satellite modem that connects through the network cable socket. All it is is a router I think. Open up a Terminal and post the output.
sudo ifconfig
sudo ifconfig -a

when you say open up a terminal....Where??How??. I haven't used linux before and don't know what you mean.

On the top left Applications => Accessories => Terminal

This should help;

Most of all enjoy and if you have any more questions, ask away :)

ahaa it gets interesting because I dont have a 'terminal' in the accessories list. What do I do now?

All versions of Linux have a terminal--it just is sometimes called something else. Look in all your menus for "terminal", "console", or something similar. It's there---trust us.

Another method is to enter ctrl-alt-F1 (or maybe F2 or F3). This will put you in terminal (command-line) mode.

Is the modem a device that connects to the cell phone network? (Not if it is really going to a satellite.) Also, who is the ISP (Internet Service Provider) that provides the connection?

Finally, this Google search has lots of info, including a Ubuntu discussion:
