Connecting to internet

I've recently installed Redhat linux on my computer. The problem is that Ive called my ISP(I use a local wireless dial-up) to tell me the settings for linux to connect to the net. They said their ISP dont support either linux or mac. But I heard somewhere that ISPs reply this way everytime they are asked such questions. The solutin is: you simply go to a forum and post your problem and experts will tell you how to connect to the internet. Can I connect to the internet even when my ISP denies this possibility?
If yes, I will tell you the details of my modem model and other stuff so you guys can advice me accordingly.

It would depend on the type of connection you are on and the method used.
And dont ask to ask. ;)

Have you tried to connect? What settings do you need?

The best way is to post information about you internet connection, your modem information , how are you going to connect to internet (dial-up, broadband) and anything that you feel can be helpful for others to help you.

Since you just installed Linux on your computer a good place to start is first making sure all your hardware has been detected.

run this command:

ifconfig

and post the results...this will be a good starting point.

When you say Redhat Linux which specific distro did you install? Unfortunately dealing with ISPs can be a hassle if you tell them that you are using Linux since mostly all call centers only deal with Microsoft OS (XP, Vista)

Problem connecting to internet
 

I am new to Linux.

I have switched to linux Fedora Core 2.6.10-1.743_FC3 from XP.
I have DLink DFE-520TX -10/100 Mbps ethernet adaptor.
Linux has loaded Via Technologies,
Inc. VT6105 (Rhine III) driver for this.
I am using UTStarcom WA3002G4 ASDL2+modem for
connecting to broad band service provided.
This was working thru XP.

I added acpi=ht in the kernel line of grub.conf.
While booting this gives the message
"ACPI unabe to locate RSDP".

While booting it gives the message
"Determining IP information Eth0- FAILED."

While trying to configure internet, when probed
linux has probed the ethernet card and identified the
mac number.

Could anybody suggest me what to do next to connect to
the broadband servce provider's server and connect
to internet.

It is not that they don't support Linux, most servers running in ISP's worldwide are linux systems, only that, most of the phone clerks are not yet familiar of linux, only their system admins hired by the company.

There are many tutorials found in the web for setting up dial up connections under linux. Try Mr. Google.

Your problem might be related to very old kernel.Do you know that latest stable Fedora is Fedora 10.You could download it.Maybe with e100 driver things would work.
Did you tried with acpi=off or noapic options in the kernel line.If acpi=off works and acpi=ht fails, then the issue is in the ACPI table parsing code itself, or perhaps the SMP code.Also I've found that D-Link DFE-530TX+ wasn't on RedHat's compatability list in 2007.

all ISP's will say the same thing. Maybe it's some kind of a problem with the distro. Try and use one of the popular distro's Live CD's, any distro will do, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Sabayon. I never had any problem with any type of distro and network, whether it's an Etherner cable, USB network cable or wireless. They all use the dynamic DNS settings.
The majority of Linuxes do not need setting up anything, so there is no need to contact the ISP, they will never help.

Boot from another distro and check if this is a distro problem.
