Connecting to Internet

Hi, I've finally got my modem driver installed on Red Hat 9, but can someone please tell me how to set the internet connection up as i dont know what to set it to, i.e. /dev/pppo, /dev/modem etc.... it is a Intel 536EP, and can someone please tell me how i connect to the internet as i cant find out how to connect. Thanks in advance..

You have to configure ppp (/etc/ppp/options and /etc/ppp/peers/provider) and also chat or wvdial.

Same problem here!

but: tried to ping for example "www.birg.at" on my windows-machine, got an IP

and if a put that IP in the MOzilla instead, i get the page

so, some kind of DNS error ?!

:newbie:
:)

found something no that worked for me ( maybe it helps you too)

/etc/resolv.conf

there you have to put in the line "nameserver XXXXX"
where XXXXXX is the DNS-IP from your provider

hope this works for you too

Thanks, ill give that a try. Have you tried using konqueror or the other build in brownser which i can not remember the name to :(. Thanks for help

carlgulliver100 02-10-2004 04:44 PM

What do i have to put their, Because im using dial up so my ip doesnt stay the same :(. Please help :) Thank you

schimmelpilz 02-10-2004 11:36 PM

the dns IP from th provider

in Windows its not necessary to know / use it

it has to be on your ISPs homepage at the Info, or call their Costumer Support

and, that IP doesnt change, even if your IP changes :) mine is also changing too every dial in :) but de dns stays :)

Thanks, What ISP are you with, i.e. Freeserve, AOL? I am with Freeserve, so could i get the information off their website? Thanks in advance :)

schimmelpilz 02-11-2004 09:14 AM

hm, problem is, i am from austria, we dont have AOL/Freeserve ;)

are u from the UK ? is freeserve.co.uk your provider ?
then maybe thats the solution:

http://www.freeserve.co.uk/help/conn...nssettings.htm

carlgulliver100 02-11-2004 09:36 AM

Ohhh, thats for that but the DNS-IP's there i already have in the /etc/resolv.conf file :( Also the internet disconnects me every 2 minutes if i dont use it, but obviously i cant because i cant load anything up. Do you have any more solutions to try. Thanks in advance....

Oliv' 02-12-2004 07:19 AM

about your /etc/resolv.con file, Have you a line like this:
Code:

search freeserve.co.uk
If not, try to add it

carlgulliver100 02-12-2004 08:02 AM

Thanks Oliv, but how do i add it? I try and access the file using the terminal and it said i dont have permision, Thanks in advance..

Oliv' 02-12-2004 08:12 AM

That's because only root has write access to this file. So log as root and edit it with vi or your favorite editor ;)

carlgulliver100 02-12-2004 08:48 AM

Oh ok thanks, do i add that to the beginning of the file? :)
