You definitely need SAMBA to do what you wish. Microsoft uses a protocol called SMB (server Message Block) for network communications. SAMBA will talk SMB and allow you to see other Windows machines (including Win 98, NT, etc.) AND share disks and printers.
I'd STRONGLY recommend a book "Using SAMBA", published by O'Reilly. It's bailed me out more times than I care to mention. Before I bought it, SAMBA drove me crazy!
