Connecting Nokia N73 to Ubuntu

I want to connect my Nokia N73 mobile in my Ubuntu system. Is there a siftware similar to Nokia PC Suite?

mganesh30:

nokia is stupid up to day, they don't support open source computing: this means, opensource program coders cannot yet port their Nokia PC Suite into Linuxes. I have tried installing it through "wine" for linux, it did but very slow and cranky. I don't know if latest "wine" can offer much improvement to host Nokia PC suite.

Somewhere I found a web page that offered instruction how to connect a linux system to *some limited* nokia models, I tried but it did not solve my need to backup my Phonebook, Messages and Images.

What I did to solve my need:

I called back a rusty machine, installed an XP for backward compatibility just for that stupid purpose.

Hope it helps.
good luck.

That is false
i think he doesnt know about nokia

install gnokii through apt-get or from its web.
It is an open source.

read its manual and configure it according to the need

I have installed gnokii on centOs through yum.
and connect nokia to usb interface.
and its working fine as sms gateway as monitoring tool.

REPLY: I know what I am talking about, I have been using almost every good model of nokia since the time when only rich people can afford to buy and use celphones in the US territories.

Anyway thanks for calling mganesh30's attention to your solution, that is help in anyway. I have been away from computing world for sometimes and my solutions needed update though. Next time do your corrections tactfully and with good manners, you don't know *who's* behind your screen.

good luck.

Well Sohail if you want to disagree with others do it with respect. Not everyone has to know about everything. I hope you know the community rules.

Gnokii is a good tool to have. You can install it either from the package manager or from the downloads section. Visit the following links for some more information.

Hello :)

AFAIK there is no software available on Linux with all the functionality of PC Suite. Hence the disagreement in this thread. gnokii offers a subset of PC Suite functionality. If that's all you want then you can use it instead of PC Suite; if not then it's no good for you however well it does the subset tasks.

It would be great if there was a Linux version of PC Suite or something with all its functionality! Only because of this issue do I run WXP in a VirtualBox VM. I feel so strongly about it I'm prepared to help with development but I don't know which of the many part-functionality packages would be best to help with. See Which Linux to cell phone integration software to help develop?.

It would be great if nokia decided to port PC Suite to Linux but they haven't despite many requests. See We need PC suite for LINUX on the nokia forums. That's their prerogative; they make their own business decisions.

My prime reason for buying nokia is PC Suite. If there was another phone with similar PC-phone integration support running under Linux then I'd change phone. If suitable software existed and enough people started switching phones then nokia would have more reason to port PC Suite to Linux but there's no sign of it happening anytime soon.

Best

Charles
