Connecting a Network Attached Storage

Hello,
I have a network attached storage that I would like top connect several computers to. It was easy to connect some Windows machines just by providing the IP address of the device. However, I have some computers that are running CentOS 6.5 which I would also like to attach to the network storage. I have looked through some tutorials on mapping a netowrk drive in linux, but I am having problems at step 1: getting the CentOS box to see the network storage. The network storage is connected directly to the CentOS box through the ethernet port, but I am not able to ping the network storage or otherwise recognize that the storage is attached. The ethernet port works fine when connected to the internet. Does it need to be configured differently if it is to be attached to netowrk storage? Is this a firewall problem?
How do I make the linux box see that it is attached to a network storage device directly through the ethernet port?

Thanks

Shouldn't both the workstation and NAS be plugged into a switch? Not directly connected by ethernet?

Yes, we have a switch. I had been connecting directly to the NAS to make sure the problem wasn't the switch. In either case, the problem persists.

What type of share(s) have you enabled on the NAS? Is it a NFTS share (that would be what your MS windows computers are seeing), have you enabled NFS or ssh on the NAS? If not that is probably why your CentOS box can not see the NAS share, you are not telling it what to see, or at least you have not told us what commands you are using so we can only go on the assumption, making asses of our selves in the process, that you are not issuing the proper commands.

This is a NAS correct? it is a NETWORK ATTACHED device correct? How would you normally connect a NETWORK device? Oh thats right you would connect it to the NETWORK, not directly to a computer, then it would be called an accessory like a keyboard or a mouse, or a monitor, or a printer that is NOT a network printer.

What is the make/model of the NAS?
What makes you think this is a firewall issue?
How is it configured?

Again you have told us it does not work, you have performed some strange connections for a network device, but you have not told us any useful information on how to properly assist you in making things work.

Have you even read the user manual for your NAS?

Or explain this. " It was easy to connect some Windows machines just by providing the IP address of the device." Where or in what? Iscsi?
