Hey,
I don't know how to do it, but I tried to attempt something like this a little while ago only on Windows machines so I could get files off of one computer which has become obsolete and has no other way of connecting to a network with the hardware I have access to. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can help with the above problem and, if possible, how to configure the same connection on a computer running Windows 98. Thanks in advance. |
Dialup networking requires both computers to have ppp enabled in the kernel and installed. One of the computers must dial the phone and the other must answer. Once the phone is answered ppp will take care of the connection and the computer that would be refered to as the server should be setup to share the internet connection with the computer that you would call the client. You can also do a shell login over the connection, use sftp, ssh, scp, http, or anything else you need to use.
A getty program will answer the phone and start ppp on the server. For the client you can use command line, ppp scripts, or a gui like kppp if you want. It is too involved to simply write it all down here, try this and let us know if you have any problems or questions. http://www.wellmodem.com.tw/support/...m-HOWTO-1.html http://www.wellmodem.com.tw/support/...ppp-howto.html I have been using mgetty for years without a problem. Maybe this will help, here is my /etc/ppp/options file on the server Code:
asyncmap 0 Code:
S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -s 57600 -x 3 ttyS0 Code:
/AutoPPP/ - a_ppp /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login asyncmap 0 192.168.1.101:192.168.1.201 Code:
setserial /dev/ttyS0 spd_hi Using mgetty my server will also accept incoming faxes. It auto detects the connection and either receives a fax or logs in a user. It also emails out your incoming faxes. |
Tahnk for the reply it as given me a good and solid start point. I'm workin on it and i'll let you know how its goin.

I think I'm getting closer, but i'm having problem with my modem. I've gotten a pkg called chk-modem which include a reset-serial. when i try to reset ttyS3 on the client it give me:
reset-serial:getattr: Input/output error |
does the modem work in minicom?
|
I found this article sometime ago which may help.
edit: just tested the link but is refusing conection; may be temporary thing |
Does not work in minicom, it doe'nt bring any error hile initializing(I dont know if it would if there is a problem...) but it does'nt work.
