Right, well TBH i've not dialed anything in years. I used to use wvdial, which I see is still installed as standard on my ubuntu laptop. There's also gnome-ppp which is a gnome front end for the wvdial backend. alternatively Network-Manager may well automatically present you with a modem connection if one is installed on your system. check the Networking options in the System menu.
