confused about sound in linux

Hi all,

I still haven't got my sound to work yet, but that's another story. What I'm getting confused about is do you have to install a sound card for each type of user on the linux system?

Because I installed the sound drivers under root login, then when I go to log in as a normal user, modprobe gives me errors saying it can't find service-1-0, which is supposed to be for card #1 correct?

I would really be grateful if someone could clear this up for me.

Thanks in advance,
Alf829

try doing a "su -" command first and then do the modprobe command

Yeah, I don't think that you can do "modprobe" except as root (well I can't on my sys!).

Hi,

Sorry if I wasn't clear before, but I installed the drivers under the root user (by logging in as root at login time) and modprobe went ok.

But when I login as a normal user, the dmesg log shows a message saying "modprobe: can't find service-1-0" or something similar. I'm not trying to modprobe anything under a normal user account, this is what the startup log is showing.

Thanks for your help on this matter though.

Cheers,
