configuring x

I have only been using linux for 6 months now and i am having trouble configuring x on my new computer
I have a P4 1.8 with a geforce 4 mx440 and i am using slackware 8 with kernal version 2.2.19
I have tried to configure x using the xf86config command but x will not start i have also downloaded the drivers from nvidia and compiled these drivers during the compling there was an error and it did not continue.
Can someone help me please

You could run xf86config without using X:

# xf86config -textmode

or if you want to use that Nvidia drivers, you could post the compile errors or put the error message in google to search for the same problem ...

Not sure if this applies to GF4 since I only have a TNT 2,but don't use framebuffers when it asks you during x config.
