Configuring the ATI RADEON 8500LE VIDEO CARD on my computer

I'm running Xubuntu, and have had problems with the video card driver since i've had it. i've seen many posts from others with the same card as me (RADEON 8500LE 128MB). Every post i've read has been different. What i did to make my card work a little better is replace "vesa" with "radeon" in the xorg.conf file. This works a lot better, but i can't seem to get the 3d graphics working. When i install the fglrx drivers, my computer freezes up. does anybody have step-by-step instructions on how i can squeeze out the tiny bit of power that my old video card is capable of? I love Ubuntu and Xubuntu and i DEFINATELY DONT WANT TO GO BACK TO WINDOWS, so help would be very appreciated!!! THANKS!

if this helps:
AMD athlon 900
384MB DDR

Are you using the fglrx drivers from the repos?

ATI dropped support for your card in the more recent fglrx drivers.

Going to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html and selecting your card, 8.28.8 is the last release of drivers for your card. what is the version number you are using?

yeah, i used 8.28.8... it just doesn't seem to run like the "radeon" driver... and although the radeon driver runs fine, it doesn't support 3d... i have a nvidia geforce3 Ti500... but i really like having the tv-out option (although i can't configure it to be applicable yet)... which do you prefer i just bite the bullet and not have tv-out ... or keep waiting for the right solution or version???
